Trados - part 2
Advantages of Trados
The main advantage of Trados is that translators can be assisted by ready-to-use dictionaries (called Translation Memories). Additional components give the chance to translate and verify translations regardless of the format with which your document was saved.
It turns out that the latest version now translates documents in seventy file formats, including OpenOffice, TXT, Java, XML, HTML, SDLXLIFF, SVG, or even Adobe files: PDF, FrameMaker, InDesign, and InCopy as well as other graphics software files such as QuarkXPress, PageMaker and Interleaf.
In addition, translators can exchange translation memories through the server.
Features in the latest version
Pay attention to the latest version of the program, where the authors have introduced useful solutions that can significantly speed up the translation.
Translator's work is streamlined by the preview option for several documents simultaneously, and also by a very useful auto-save feature.
This allows the translator to work in a more relaxed manner and to avoid stressful data loss during translation. However, it needs to be said that in the latest version of Trados the problem primarily dealt with was long waiting time of importing a document. Introducing a new algorithm has significantly reduced that time.
However, there are some disadvantages
Of course, every rose has its thorn and as in any other case, we also have to watch some downsides. In this case, the downside is that Trados is a rather complex and complicated program compared to other CAT tools like OmegaT or Wordfast. Unfortunately, in order to effectively use the program, the translator cannot limit himself to getting to know the user instructions. Unfortunately, you have to perform a deeper analysis and test it in practice.
So it may take some time before the user can learn about all the functions and feel confident with using them.
However, despite the fact that Trados is quite time-consuming for beginners, it is necessary to take into consideration that when we master it, the time spent on learning will pay off.
The main disadvantage is its price, especially for novice translation agencies or people wanting to buy the program individually. As you may guess, it is not the cheapest piece of software. However, considering its range of functionality, it is a reasonable investment.
If you are the owner of a translation agency, you should consider buying it due to the fact that it is a fully professional tool used by most reputable offices around the world.
Its knowledge is also recommended to all those, who dream of a career in the translation industry, and it is simply a must-have tool in the profession of translator.
